Persistent Physical Symptoms: Definition, Genesis, and Management
Persistent physical symptoms, also known as persistent somatic symptoms, refer to distressing bodily complaints that endure for several months or longer, regardless of their underlying cause. These symptoms often result in significant disability and impose a heavy burden on patients, healthcare providers, and society as a whole. While they may follow infections, injuries, or medical conditions, persistent physical symptoms can also emerge without any clear initial trigger. As time passes, the connection between these symptoms and identifiable medical conditions tends to diminish, complicating both diagnosis and treatment. A variety of biological and psychosocial factors contribute to the persistence of these symptoms, including chronic inflammation, epigenetic factors, immune and metabolic dysregulation, early life stress, and mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. Understanding the complex and multifactorial nature of persistent somatic symptoms is essential for improving patient outcomes through personalized care that addresses both the biological and psychosocial components of the condition. This article explores the definition, genesis, and management of persistent physical symptoms, aiming to shed light on this often misunderstood and challenging issue.
